Emergency Transfers

Image
This week started out like any other week, but then we got a call from other missionaries that they needed help with some service, but they didn't tell us what it was, so we went. We put the address into google maps and it brought us to a literal mountain and said the house was near the top, so we had to walk up one of the steepest hills of my life. Once we finally got up there the elders looked at us with an evil grin and we knew we were in for a fun time. We saw a giant pile of sand at the top of an even steeper hill with 2 buckets with sleds on the bottom of them with rope connected to them and a bunch of tarps, so I had no idea what was gonna happen haha. We ended up having to put sand in the buckets and drag the buckets down the mountain with the ropes, putting the sand in a tarp and carrying the tarp on the side of the mountain to the ladies house where there was another tarp. While this was happening the lady was trying to make sure the evil...

These 2 weeks were both awful and pretty cool. They were awful because I got super sick last week and sick days on the mission are not fun. At home you can sleep and watch tv and do whatever, but on the mission, you're just trapped in the house calling people all day long... not fun. But it was pretty cool because we baptized 2 people.      The first person we baptized is named William and he's 10 years old and he was kind of frustrating to teach because he had infinite energy and likes to punch and kick and head butt us. He didn't really think he needed to learn because his older brother is a member, so he already wanted to be baptized. There was one lesson where we taught him who Joseph Smith was probably 20 times because we asked him who he was 20 times and he didn't know haha. We felt super bad though because the water heater didn't work for the baptismal font, so the water was freezing and he was shivering really bad. But he's baptized...

Sorry I haven't been writing my email, it's always the last thing on my mind, so this email will be about the last 3 weeks.      The first thing that happened was we had transfers and I'm in a trio now. It's kind of fun but also kind of hard because now there are always 3 different opinions and 3 different people that need to use the bathroom every morning haha.       One day we were walking down a sketchy alley at night and we saw a dude digging a hole with a pickaxe which honestly isn't that weird in Peru. As we got closer, we were about to ask if he needed help but then we saw a dead dog right next to the hole...we decided he was doing just fine on his own haha.      We got a new guy in our district this transfer, and he got a really good first experience. He doesn't know any Spanish and his companion doesn't know very much English and so he had no idea what was going on. We went to this house for service, and they ga...
This will be a pretty short email because my last pday was like 4 days ago haha. I just have 2 stories.        We were out knocking doors, and we knocked the last door on the street, and we heard a bunch of kids in the house screaming their heads off, then one of them hangs out of the window and we were like, hey how's it going, are your parents' home? And he says no but my older brother is. Then he disappeared and we heard a bunch of screaming and arguing and junk, then like 5 minutes later, (it felt like 30) he came back to the window and said he's coming. Another 5 minutes go by and the kid was just staring at us, then finally the door opened and the older brother came out and we invited him to church and stuff, then he just says, why are you here, we were like, we're just inviting everyone to church, and he's like, ok but like why are you here, in Puno? So we explained that we're missionaries, and he just kept asking questions, "w...

Christmas

Image
This past week was pretty great. For Christmas we basically just tried to do service all day, which was honestly a nice break from proselyting and hearing, "no gracias, yo soy católico," over and over haha. But at the end of the day, we got to watch Elf. It was in Spanish but honestly, I thought it was funnier in Spanish.       We had zone conference this week as well, which was...super fun and not boring at all. But after zone conference we were able to go to the Uros, which are super cool. They are floating islands in the middle of Lake Titicaca. I have no idea where they came from, but they're just floating islands made of sticks and grass with houses and people living on them. We sang some Christmas carols to them, and they pretended to like it.       Before we went to the Uros, we ate some food and it had nuts in it, so me and my comp had to go to a sketchy pharmacy and buy a pill for me. It was super cheap, and it did absolute...

Dogs on the roof

This week felt like 3 weeks but at the same time felt like 2 days. Time is kinda weird on the mission. I've been set apart as a missionary for more than 2 months now, but it feels like maybe 2 weeks. I honestly forgot that the MTC even happened.      This week it rained almost every day which was not pleasant. We had a service project in the plaza, which is basically a square of tents selling the most random objects that you could possibly imagine. But the ZLs never showed up and we were the only district there. Then we got a call from the ZLs and my comp made me answer it to "practice my Spanish" but there's one thing I've learned so far on the mission. Spanish on the phone is impossible to understand. They can be saying a phrase I've heard 100 times but it's cutting out and sounds like they're underwater haha. So I answered the phone and heard gibberish but I caught 4 or 5 words. I heard, servicio, demorado, comenzar, ocho, so I guesse...

Week 2 in Peru

Image
Hey guys sorry for missing my email last week, I didn't do it in the morning when I had time, then before I knew it, it was too late. The travel to get to Peru was awful haha. We left the mtc at like 7am ish and we got to Peru at 9:30am the next day. I dont know about you, but 26 hours of travel without any entertainment when everyone is speaking Spanish for the second half is not pleasant, but we got here.       The first few days were pretty fun. All the new missionaries stayed in Cusco for a few days with the APs, office elders, and the mission president while they figured out the transfers and stuff. We basically were given cards with a picture of Jesus and directions to the church building and were told to street contact. I felt like an annoying sales person but at least I know my product is good haha.      I went to a lesson with one of the APs and he doesn't speak any English but it ended up going good. I just shared a scripture, e...
